tunesday – a quick chat with ninajirachi
In issue 121, we have a chinwag with the DJ and producer all about her newest EP, "Girl EDM".
What was the first song you remember loving? Back when Maccas gave out little MP3 players was how I discovered “4ever” by The Veronicas. My mum bought me their album and I became obsessed.
How would your friends describe you? Furry, always surprising and mischievous.
What is your favourite track to play live? At the moment it’s probably “Ice u out” or “Ninacamina” from girl EDM; those songs have an amazing energy and get a good crowd reaction.
What inspired girl EDM? I wanted to make songs that combine my current sound with the sensibilities of EDM from 15 years ago. I think enough time has passed for early 2010s music to be revisited in a meaningful way.
Who would you love to have a back-to-back DJ set with? Porter Robinson or Charli XCX because they are my musical heroes, and because they are song-makers first and foremost. In another life it would be SOPHIE: she’s been my musical hero for 10 years and I feel lucky that I got to see her play before she passed.
How would you describe your personal style? I love exaggerated proportions and looking like a cartoon character, but comfort is my first priority. I love flared pants, Adam Sandler shorts, big sunglasses and anything that feels silly.
Where can we find you on a Sunday arvo? On a flight back from a show or at home making music with a cup of tea, watching YouTube, reading a fantasy book, playing Switch, playing chess on my phone and planning the week ahead.
How do you deal with a creative block? Doing something else like playing games or watching movies, going outside, seeing friends and family or looking for new artists and albums I haven’t heard before.
