this ace multidisciplinary artist lets us in on her creative process
It's hard to find a super-talented creative who just so happens to be a whizz at everything they get their mitts on, but we think we've found that creative in the form of Sydney/Gadigal-based Feker Yibeltal (aka @_feks), who dabbles in animation, photography, embroidery, videography and more.
We were lucky enough to steal a quick chat with the multidisciplinary artist, who was nice enough to tell us about her biggest art inspirations, the ideas present in her work and her favourite medium to partake in.
Please introduce yourself. Hey! I’m Feker, aka Feks, and I am a multidisciplinary artist based in Sydney/Gadigal.
What, or who, are some of your biggest creative inspirations? Definitely my friends and my family. I draw a lot of my inspiration from them and also my day-to-day surroundings – like the leaf I saw on the ground today or the sound of paper shuffling in my printer. Also, Gregory Crewdson and Lourdes Grobet are some honourable mentions.

Talk to us about some of the themes present in your work. I've been told I'm a nostalgic person. Which I suppose I am – there's something comforting about holding onto memories and feeling like I can experience them again even if it's just for a moment – hence why I revisit a lot of childhood and cultural heritage, which I guess is a common theme throughout my work.
How would you describe your art style? Fun, bold, daring and a little whimsical at times.
Out of all of the art mediums you partake in, what is your favourite and why? Ugh, that's tough. But I’d probably say stop-motion and animation work has to be my favourite because it allows me to transform a single object into countless moving pieces.
It's so beautiful watching it come to life frame-by-frame, and it’s also taught me the value of patience (which I couldn’t say I had much of). Animating has genuinely revealed the wonder in everything and shown me that creativity is never-ending. I feel like I enter a new realm every day.

How do you get in the mood to start creating? I’m a real big procrastinator – believe it or not. After some much-needed dilly-dallying, I sit and ponder a little more and then let my heart do as it desires. But with that being said, once I start a project I’m locked in! Also, almost all my work begins with a soundtrack of some sort.
And how do you get out of a creative block? I definitely don’t beat myself up for it. In fact, I think a creative block is all part of the process. If I can’t come up with something the first couple of times, I completely walk away from it, go outside, touch some grass and perhaps even take a stroll somewhere I haven’t been before and commence the next day.
It's not an ideal situation but I’m not a robot, and this is just art – at least that's what I tell myself.
What do you hope people get out of your art? I hope my art feels like living and breathing pieces that capture a glimpse of what goes on in my chaotic brain.
What’s a dream project for you? Probably a solo exhibition or a photo book!
