why this shutterbug made this poignant photo series
Pieza Madre (translated to “mother piece” from Spanish), was shot by Spanish photographer and graphic designer, Andoni Beristain, after the sudden death of his mother at 63 years old. Using the colour yellow as a metaphor for his mother, bright objects stand out amongst their vast surroundings and act as a guiding prescience that literally lightens up our world, Andoni shot 63 powerful photos that honour his mother’s life and memory.
Andoni explains that Pieza Madre is “an exploration of the exterior, a need to fill a void, tell a story, and honour a woman, using yellow, the colour of bad luck but also joy, sun and happiness, as a motto.” This entire series can be found on his website here, and make sure to scope out the rest of his lovely photos while you’re at it.
