this photo series highlights the overlooked charm of discarded gum
Chewing gum is a pretty neat invention when you start to really think about it. It's colourful, flexible and keeps our breath under control with a (usually) minty taste – not to mention the iconic bubblegum subspecies, a long-time favourite of the unbothered queens of high school. However, after we’re done chewing, we haphazardly stick it under desks or on the dirty city streets, which Boston-based shutterbug Aaron Luckman couldn’t help but notice on his daily commute.
Aaron began a still ongoing project – aptly called Gum Shoo – in 2020 to document some of the colourful gum he found on the streets, describing the ever-present material as “evidence of our past existence reminding us that even we are no longer present, we linger in unexpected places, waiting to be noticed and appreciated.” We don’t know about you folks, but we reckon we’ll never think about the humble chewing gum in the same way ever again. Peep his project over by his Instagram this-a-way, if you fancy more gummy goodness.
