this pair of double-decker theatres are the last of their kind
First built in 1913 and located in downtown Toronto, Canada, The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres are two theatres literally stacked on top of each other, and are the last remaining Edwardian-built stacked theatres left in the entire world. That’s already pretty wild, but the interiors of each performance space are pretty dang beautiful, too.
The Elgin Theatre, located on the ground floor of the building, is fully decked out in a super-regal red and gold colour scheme, while the upstairs Winter Garden Theatre looks and feels like something truly magical. Cascading leafy plants cloak its ceiling, nature scenes are painted across the walls, columns are dressed up like sturdy tree trunks and fairy-tale lanterns are scattered throughout.
