this artist taps into the timeless allure of unicorns with hazy paintings
Do you remember, as a young’un, having a love and fascination with the pastel-coloured ponies adorned with a magical horn that were sprinkled within the confines of our favourite picture-books and fairy tales? Waking up to realise that unicorns are sadly not real and we will never be able to go on whimsical adventures with this one-horned equine broke our hearts, but we’re happy that Oregon-based painter, Colete Martin, has gifted us with the closest way we’ll ever get to see a real-life unicorn: unsuspectedly caught on a nature trail camera.
Colete captures these mythical creatures mid-gallop, trot, swim and just doing the regular old stuff you’d expect a horse to get up to, leaving us to wonder: if unicorns really were out there in the wild, how would they spend their days? Colete explains that she chose to paint in the same style as a CCTV lens in order to provide "a unique perspective on mythical creatures, typically relegated to the realms of fantasy and folklore," which allows an introduction of "the mythical with the technological invites contemplation on our relationship with mystery and the unknown in our increasingly digitized society." If you’re like us, you probably can’t get enough of these unicorn paintings, so we suggest hopping over to Colete’s website or Instagram page if you want a closer look.
