thirza schaap turns beach trash into art
How good are these sculptures by Thirza Schaap? The Dutch lass has been turning discarded plastic into art and photographing it for her Plastic Ocean series since 2017.
While Thirza’s works are often pastel-hued, perfectly composed and pretty, the meaning behind them is grim. “Plastic Ocean questions consumption, idolatry and what it is we value in our lives today,” she says. “Our beaches are covered in plastic confetti and there really is nothing to celebrate.”
Thirza continues to use her arty abilities to raise awareness about plastic pollution in our oceans (her Plastic Ocean series is rather extensive these days), so keep an eye on her website and Instagram for more of her rad work.
