alexey kondakov blends classical portraits with our modern world
Ukraine-based artist and graphic designer, Alexey Kondakov, has a penchant for fusing the soft and neoclassical painted portraits of yore with today’s world – which isn’t nearly as picturesque as how life is depicted in said paintings. Often placed in dirty subways, liminal spaces or surrounded by the familiar conveniences of our modern era, these ethereal figures simultaneously fit right at home and completely stand out against their surroundings.
Alexey photographs the backgrounds of each piece by exploring his native city of Kyiv and other urban areas located throughout Europe, before adding these painted figures and creating familiar scenes of modern life that – in another time – would have been filled with these angelic folk going about their business.
