ýr jóhannsdóttir’s weird and wonderful textile designs

There’s art you hang on your wall to quietly appreciate, and art you engage with that feels immersive and alive. Ýr Jóhannsdóttir’s exhibitions fall firmly into the latter camp, with a big ol’ heaping of fun and humour. The Iceland-born designer creates work primarily with wool, bringing to life everyday objects like pizza--a recent exhibition saw attendees line up to ‘order’ a slice of woven pizza made from leftover fabrics of the wool industry.

In 2020, she created wearable art in the form of sweaters with gaping mouths and giant stitched hot dogs: her site explains that “most of the sweaters got into sauce-related accidents in their former lives, probably related to hot dog consumption.” This is weird in the absolute BEST way and you just have to see it to believe it. Peep the collections here and reconsider everything you thought you knew about hot dogs.
