william mullan snaps curious apples

The apple, as we know it, is the most basic of fruits. It’s crisp, sweet and round, and usually comes in shades of red or green. It fits nicely into a lunchbox, and eating one a day supposedly keeps the doctor away.

Little did we know that there’s actually so much more to the humble fruit. Brooklyn shutterbug William Mullan has made an art of finding and photographing the many weird and wonderful varieties of apple, and documenting their fascinating histories. “Some of these apples look like frogs; some are pink inside; some look psychedelic, and some look like stars,” he says of the curious varieties. William has come across so many strange apples over the years that he decided to turn his collection of snaps into a swish photobook: Odd Apples. Unfortunately, the publication seems to be as rare as the apples it showcases, despite being less than a year old. (You can still nab special-edition posters featuring the photographs from William’s website, though.) For more apple-related facts and wonderful photographs, have a squiz at William's Instagram.
