The band's vocalist and guitarist tells us all the great things that make her tick.

THE COLOUR PINK When I was a teenager, I was a tomboy and came from this awesome family of tough women. Everyone fulfilled roles that were traditionally masculine. When I started playing guitar, that was also considered a bit masculine. I thought I had to push down my femininity to get respect, so I told myself I didn’t like pink. I realised that was internalised misogyny as I got older. I love wearing pink. It suits my skin tone, it’s the colour of galahs, and I’ve been able to find all this joy in it. I go to hardcore shows in Melbourne where everyone’s wearing black and I turn up in bright pink.

MY OTHER HALF Our song “Time for You” is about my partner James, and how coming home and being with him makes me feel really calm. It’s an opportunity to talk about whatever has made me unnecessarily stressed out that day. James is good at making me feel OK about being myself, and getting me out of my head. That song is quite simple and joyful and it doesn’t overthink itself, and that is something I get from the relationship.

MY DOG BARRY We adopted Barry in 2020 (stereotypical lockdown behaviour) and he’s a little ray of sunshine. It doesn’t matter how bad I’m feeling – if I give him a pat or go for a run with him, I’m filled with joy. When we adopted him, he was six months old and his name was Blackie. We didn’t think that was a good name, so we picked something similar so that he wasn’t super-confused. We love dogs that have human names – you imagine ‘Barry’ as your 80-year-old uncle. When we took him to the park, everyone obviously had the same idea. There was a Larry, a Harry and another Barry.

FEEL-GOOD TUNES I have a really cheesy playlist called ‘You got this babe’. It’s a playlist of bangers that make me feel better, so of course it’s got Lizzo, Missy Elliott, Cardi B, Kylie… all the classics! If I’m having a crap day, I put it on and dance, cook extremely enthusiastically or go for a run. I think it was another 2020 edition. I was like, “Alright, let’s get some serotonin in our brain!” You can fix lots of things with a dance to Kylie Minogue.

SUPPORTING MATES It makes me really happy to watch my friends do their thing. I love being part of the music community where I can see my friends play in bands and do what they love, especially when they’re doing something really weird. The gigs I love the most are the ones where it’s a totally fresh band and everything’s kind of falling apart, but everyone’s having a really good time. But supporting mates could also mean watching my friend give a presentation about her PhD, or listening to my friends talk about Dungeons & Dragons at the pub.

BIG VIBRATIONS I get a lot of joy from playing with ridiculously loud amps. I put earplugs in (you’ve gotta be safe), but I really enjoy the feeling in your body when you're completely bathed in sound. A big part of the sound of Cable Ties is getting distortion by turning the amp up to a certain level and making it break up. The challenge is trying to translate that on to the stage while being at a reasonable volume. I also love going to really loud gigs where you’re in the crowd and it’s so loud that no one can talk or do anything but be present.
