tunesday – things you should know about miiesha
We knew big things were in store for Miiesha when we first chatted to the RnB songstress in issue 94. At the end of May, she released Nyaaringu, a collection of deeply personal songs about identity, discrimination and self belief. Miiesha's soulful, velvety voice is an absolute dream, but before you race towards the play button, take a second to learn a bit about the rising talent below.
She first started making music at age 14. My nan signed me up for a music program in my community. It was there I wrote my first song, and when I was flown to Sydney to perform it at a NAIDOC event, I realised I should keep going. I continued performing in high school, then in late 2018 I decided to take music seriously and make it my life.
Her community keeps her grounded. In Woorabinda, I feel comfortable and connected in a way I don't feel anywhere else. Moving away from community can be really difficult, but the people in Woorabinda will always encourage you to follow your passion and face the challenges that come with it.
Her culture is a guiding force. It's who I am. My culture and upbringing have shaped the woman I am now, and will continue to guide me. I've been able to connect with my Pitjantjatjara language and put that in my music, too, which is very important to me.
Her number one pet peeve is having to repeat myself a lot.
Her perfect date would involve a theme park and Korean BBQ. He would have it all organised, because I'm not good at making decisions.
Her last meal would be salty plum with lemon! It's not really a meal, but I'd definitely be having that.
