tunesday – my favourite things with ashlee kehoe of floodlights
Ahead of the release of Floodlights' new album Painting of My Time on April 21st, vocalist and guitarist Ashlee Kehoe shares her top band moments.
Favourite Floodlights-related memory? When we played Boogie Festival. It was our first festival and a big stage for us at the time. Feeling the excited nerves together left a memorable mark on our journey as a band. We also had a massive group of friends to share the experience with. It was hot, there was a lake and we felt on top of the world.
Favourite food to eat after playing a gig? We always end up at Macca’s. We swear off it every time, but it always draws us in and we end up ordering 50 nuggets. “Nothing else is open,” is what we tell ourselves.
Favourite lyric off your new album, Painting of My Time? “The factory of your thoughts, makes joy for me.”
Favourite place to write a song? On the Merri Creek in Melbourne. I usually go for a walk down there before work. Often, that’s the time when things spring to mind and formulate into a poem or set of lyrics.
Favourite way to rev up an audience? We like having a rev-up walk-out song that contrasts with our music. We recently used “Calling All Dancers” by Luca Lozano.
Favourite gig you’ve played? The trip to Alice Springs and Darwin last year was really special. We had been trying to get up there for two years, and they were two of our most joyous shows. We had friends in both places who took us exploring. We had a whirlwind two-day camping trip to Kakadu after the shows to cap it off.
Favourite album? Ants from Up There by Black Country New Road. The intricate layers of instrumentation and dynamic vocals had a big influence on our new album.
