The singer-songwriter chats about video games, music inspirations and her penchant for the colour blue.
Since 2013, Faye Webster has become one of the most beloved indie darlings for music fans all across the globe. The Atlanta-born muso sat down with us to chat all about her upcoming tour in Australia as well as her newest album, Underdressed at the Symphony, and, most importantly, what her favourite Pokémon game is.
Hiya Faye! Are you excited to start touring in Australia? Definitely. It’s a long flight for sure, but I’ll try and get some sleep on the plane. I’m excited to just see everything and do as much as I can here.
You have said before that you’re a big Pokémon fan. What is your favourite game, and why? Good question! I love Sword and Shield, to be honest, and there’s this one on the Nintendo DS called Pokémon Ranger that I love, even though it’s so unpopular. I also actually like playing with the physical cards!
Do video games help with inspiration for your music or are they strictly a pastime activity? I think it just helps me deal with pain or hard things going on in my life, which eventually turns into being emotionally available to actually write music.
You also went to high school with Lil Yachty, you’ve photographed him and now you have a new song out with him. What is it like having such a long history with a fellow muso? It’s so nice. I love our friendship and artistic relationship. I feel like it’s nice to just have somebody to trust and go to for advice, especially someone from my hometown in Atlanta. He's just so fun to be around, and I loved recording "Lego Ring" with him.
Talk to us about your upcoming album, Underdressed at the Symphony. What are its main themes and inspirations? A lot of inspiration for this album came from spending a lot of time alone. I had to cope with that and try and find things that still make me happy. It was tough, but it also got my brain working extra hard.
Is there a song off this album that you’re especially fond of? I really like “Feeling Good Today” because it’s the original shitty demo that I recorded. We tried to re-record it to sound a lot nicer and professional, but it just didn’t sound as good. I have a sentimental attachment to it and I love how sincere it sounds.
And why are you so drawn to cobalt blue as a shade? This colour is present in the artwork of this album and all of the promo. I honestly don’t know; it’s just such a noble colour and I love how it looks. I don’t have an answer, I just like it.
Is there anything you’re excited about in 2024? Oh god. I haven’t even thought about it yet! I feel like that’s the first thing you should know in the new year, but it’s still early so there’s a lot to discover! I’m excited to reconnect with my band since it’s been about a month since I’ve been playing shows, and I’m happy that Australia will kick off the year for us!
