this war-torn london church is now a public garden

The Church of St. Dunstan in the East (try saying that five times fast) is located right in the heart of the city of London and has been through a lot during its long life, which first began in Medieval England in the early 1100s. It was badly damaged during the 1666 Great Fire of London before being rebuilt, and was then severely bombed during The Blitz in WWII which left it in ruined disarray for decades.

It remained a bombed-out and abandoned shell until 1967, when it was decided that the church overgrown with ivy, trees and native foliage will be transformed into a public garden. St. Dunstan in the East is now home to a plethora of flowers and even has a fountain, transforming a once bitter reminder of the causalities of war into a living memorial and space for nature to flourish. If you’re planning a trip down to London anytime soon, make sure to add this beautiful church-turned-garden to your itinerary.
