this crocheted wharenui is literally a house of joy

Lissy and Rudi Robinson-Cole are a husband-and-wife creative duo that takes a love for colourful crochet to heights that we’ve personally never seen before – and boy, are we impressed. The couple had been adding playful wool creations onto their neighbourhood fences and even gave their car a crocheted makeover, but they soon set their sights on building a full-size wharenui (a communal Māori meeting house that is carved from wood) that is fully made from wool.

This project is called “Wharenui Harikoa” which translates to “House of Joy”, and after getting a good look at their kaleidoscopic and incredibly detailed creation, we have to say that the name is truly fitting. The couple says that Wharenui Harikoa is “a manifestation of our dreams, identity and the love we have for each other and our people,” as well as “a tribute to our tūpuna (ancestors), a celebration of our culture and a testament to the healing power of art”.
