the whimsical restaurants of japan
Themed cafes, izakayas (bars) and restaurants are not out of the ordinary in Japan. These venues aren’t just popular for the food, but they also offer diners an unique experience, providing bursts of colour and fun to everyone’s busy lives.
But why are they so popular? In a society that values the interests of the collective group over individual expression, Professor of Japanese language and culture at UNSW, Dr Kazue Okamoto, introduces a Japanese saying, “the nail that sticks out gets hammered down”. From a young age, Japanese children are taught to suppress their truest form of self in order to keep the peace amongst the group to not become the ‘nail that gets hammered down’. However, everything that is repressed looks for a way out. “By going to a theme cafe and experiencing a unique atmosphere that is different from your usual life, you may be able to experience a simulated experience, as if you were released from your own framework,” she comments. As a result, these venues “heal your heart”.
For an 'only in Japan' type of experience, here are some themed restaurants to check out the next time you are in Japan’s bustling metropolis, Tokyo.
For Train Lovers – Little TVG Izakaya
It is no secret Japan has some of the best and fastest trains in the world. And what better way to appreciate them than at a train-themed izakaya. Frequented by train hobbyists, train staff and just general lovers of Japanese trains from tourists to locals alike, the interior of the izakaya is modelled after vintage Japanese trains. Attention to detail can be found throughout from the replication of the menu layout inspired by Tokyo’s train lines to beverages that mimic the colour scheme of beloved bullet trains to even how the fried egg roll is decorated with seaweed tracks and windows and made to look like a train. The bar manager notes, “The izakaya is a space for people with similar interests and hobbies to meet and become friends.” For A Ninja Experience – Ninja Tokyo
Ninja Tokyo is a discreet restaurant that exudes an air of mystery from the moment you step into the complex. A ninja slides through the shadows to guide you safely through the dark caves and through traps laid out by enemies into the safe confines of your dining table and seats, where a theatrical magic show begins as you are served your multi-course meal. Who knew playing with food could be this fun? Our ninja server commented that he has been fascinated by ninjas growing up and had always wanted to be a ninja since watching the anime, Naruto, as a kid. Working at Ninja Tokyo has allowed him to make that dream come true. For Sarino Lovers – Pompom Purin Cafe
Gaps of "kawaii" (cute) can be heard throughout the whole cafe amongst young girls to grown women alike. Besides the interior brimming with bright yellow, the food, drinks and waitress’ outfits are also obviously Pompom Purin themed. “Seeing cute things like this really makes me happy.” exclaimed a diner in delight next to me when she was served her Pom Pom Purin omurice (omelet rice). Those seeking a Sarino themed restaurant with Hello Kitty and friends related edible goods should check out Sarino Cafe located in Ikebukuro. For A Trip Back To Your Childhood – An elementary Themed Izakaya (Rokunen Yonkumi)
If you’ve ever wondered what it was like growing up in Japanese schools, make your way over to Rokunen Yonkumi (6th Grade, Class 4). Step back into the simpler days as the waitress transforms into your school teacher, and you are invited to doodle on the chalkboard, whilst snacking on izakaya food and winding down with a beer or two. For 500 yen, you are able to eat all the Japanese childhood snacks you can - from Hello Kitty to boobie shaped chocolates to squid flavoured crackers. Midway through the feast, the waitress comes and gives you a test to take. “Coming here really gives me a nostalgic feeling, like I am a child again. It allows me to go back to simpler days.” noted a diner. If you fancy checking out some more themed cafes and restaurants in Tokyo, consider these:
