the secret lives of japan’s feline residents

By

There are about 6,800 islands surrounding Japan’s mainland, with an extra special few where feral cats vastly outnumber the human residents. These are called ‘nekojima’ – meaning ‘cat islands’ – where humans and cats live in (mostly) perfect harmony.

There are also an estimated one million stray cats residing in Japan’s larger cities, and shutterbug Masayuki Oki has made it his mission to snap as many of them as he possibly can for the last eight years. He explores his home city of Tokyo to much smaller islands such as Aoshima, where he captures moggies from all walks of life. Take a gander at Oki’s Instagram if you're in the mood for gazing upon some extra-cute cats.
