Most of us have had childish fantasies of having a wild animal as a pet at least once in our lives. We’d share our living quarters, give them fancy collars and they’d of course become our very best friends forever, but we’ve never dared to actually go through with it because A. It’s illegal and B. We’d rather not have our curtains (and our limbs) torn to shreds. This moral and dangerous dilemma never seemed to faze the people of the past, however, since there’s heaps of old-timey photos of people hanging about with some quite unusual pets, which we grabbed from Vintage Everyday.
From grizzly bears to bison, leopards and zebras, having pets in the old days meant less about having a lovable companion around and was more of a very weird and incredibly perilous way to show off one's wealth, which thankfully has not stuck around in our current day and age (much). While we might always wonder about what it would be like to safely snuggle with a full-grown lion, we reckon that it’s best if we just stick to our domestic moggies and pooches and keep these other guys in the wild where they belong.
