Alternative Women’s Fitness (AWF) provides fitness outside the norm for women. Classes are held at a variety of venues around Melbourne, with our collective hub situated in Thornbury.
AWF sessions often feature heavy, alternative music. Classes like Sculptallica®, Metal Mayhem Ballet, Brutali-Tease burlesque and Metal Meditation have garnered us attention from the media. Another crazy idea we had was a Kath & Kim fitness class for Mother’s Day 2017. It proved a huge success, with traction at several news outlets.
In addition to yoga, pilates, boxing and muay thai for women, we’ve also made classes available to teen girls. In 2018 we’re working with not-for-profit group Girls Rock! Melbourne, with a punk-rock boxing class as part of their camp for teen girls in music. We’ll also work with Girl Geek Academy/Women of DevOps – an organisation encouraging girls/women to join tech industries.
We love celebrating women, but we’ve also listened to our following and can see an opportunity to grow. In 2018, we’re launching Alternative Rainbow Fitness – an additional set of quirky and gender-inclusive fitness programs with our loved and established trainers. Alongside AWF sessions, we’re expanding throughout Melbourne to interesting venues like The Tote, Dancing Dog, Old Bar and 3 Ravens Brewery.
Music is integral at AWF, and we love supporting local female artists by stocking their merch and chucking the odd gig. We also love throwing documentary screenings, art exhibitions, fight nights and more for our growing community. Our flagship digital magazine, CRAMP, has become our new platform to feature local girl legends, including musicians, designers, writers, models and more. We’ve also used CRAMP to vote YES, introduced a political column, and will continue our vocal support of mental health initiatives.
