mia vinaccia – the real housewives

Kia ora! I’m a Wellington-based photographic artist and director whose work walks the line between dream and reality. My use of set design, styling, lighting and framing allows me to construct a fictional photographic tableau of the classic Western picture through my own eyes.
As a woman, there’s a constant pressure to strive for perfection every day. Gender stereotypes and unrealistic beauty ideals impact how we view ourselves and other people. The Real Housewives is a series that reveals how the overdone stereotype of a housewife is decaying in contemporary society. Pulling inspiration from pop culture imagery and television, this work challenges the restrictive roles of women from the 1950s to the present and the perpetual objectification of female sexuality. By using the lens as a medium for social critique, this work challenged the idea that ‘a good wife always knows her place’.
