My piece is a fictional story touching on themes of mental health, suicide and the elderly, and was written in 2018. The themes in this story are particularly relevant with the enactment of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act in Victoria. This piece of legislation will allow many seriously ill Victorians to be in control of the end of their lives. Unfortunately, it will also discount the experience of many elderly or mentally unwell individuals. My story encourages readers to think about the role of choice and mental health as we age.
