kate robinson and maria birch-morunga – being biracial
Writing + Podcasts
Melbourne, VIC
We are two biracial women fascinated by identity, race and the Spice Girls. Kate is Iranian/Australian, and Maria is Maori and Pakeha. We started our podcast Being Biracial as part of our residency at Footscray Community Arts Centre in Melbourne.
Being Biracial is a podcast about navigating the world as a mixed-race person. Growing up, we never felt like we belonged. We were either too much or not enough, and our parents weren’t equipped to help us with the multiplicity of our existence.
Biracial identity is often missing from discussions about race in Australia and Aotearoa. Our podcast features interviews with people of many different mixes, and delves into our names, white-passing privilege and linguistic insecurity. It’s a celebration of our shared stories and our way of creating the community we never had growing up. The podcast launches in September 2021.
