“Boomerang Bags is a community-driven initiative tackling plastic pollution at the grassroots level. We mobilise communities to gather their friends, grandmothers, study buddies, classmates and colleagues to make reusable bags from recycled fabric, and they’re then made available as a community resource to replace plastic bags. Through community sewing bees, Boomerang Bags provides a platform to raise awareness, start conversations, upcycle material and shift society's throwaway mentality to a more sustainable revolution of reuse. Since 2014, Boomerang Bags has spread into 54 communities worldwide, handmade over 50,000 reusable bags, replaced 25 million plastic bags, and diverted over 8000 kg of waste from landfill.”
