j forsyth – portraits of social distancing

Photography

Melbourne, VIC

My name is J (hippy parents). In my arts practice I work with 35mm film and digital photography to document the everyday of Australian life, using light, shape, tone and texture to evoke new meaning and intimacy.

When social distancing became part of our lives in March, my arts practice and ongoing family portrait series evolved. My documentary work took on a street photography vibe and my family portrait project evolved into photographing people from a distance at home, working, adjusting to unemployment and self-isolating.

I exchanged my film camera for my work digital kit so I would be self-sufficient and used my exercise time each day to capture what was evolving, documenting people’s lives inside. Uncle Jack Charles was in self-isolation. I took this photo from the oval below the tower block.
