Breathe in. Breathe out. Repeat. That second breath was brought to you by seaweed.

In the ’80s, underwater forests of crayweed, a once-common type of seaweed, began to decline. Crayweed is an essential component of a healthy marine ecosystem. Like our forests on land, crayweed captures carbon and produces oxygen, while providing habitat to hundreds of marine species.

Scientists have found an innovative way to restore crayweed, by quite literally replanting these lost underwater forests. We produced, filmed and edited this short film to help the team at Operation Crayweed share the story behind their science.
