get to know our issue 112 cover artist, clara mcallister
The Brazilian creative tells us about the inspiration behind her magical work.
Hi Clara, tell us about how you became an artist. I’ve been drawing and painting since I was able to hold a pencil. My father is an artist and for most of the time he worked from home, so I was very much influenced by him, just by watching his process. I also had access to his art materials and that helped me a lot in my development as a young artist.
How did you land on your magical style? I don’t know why, but I’ve always been very drawn to magical elements and the supernatural in art, even though I’m a very skeptical person in general. I guess I find this style aesthetically pleasing.

What tools do you use to create? My favourite medium right now is gouache.
Does where you live inspire your work? I live in São Paulo, which is a big city in Brazil with a lot of concrete and not much nature around to inspire me. I get much more of my inspiration when I get to travel to other places.
What’s your favourite animal to draw? It depends on my mood. Right now, I’m obsessed with drawing birds.

What’s your dream project? I have a lot of dream projects. Something that I would love to do right now is to design a homewares collection with my signature.
Where can we see more from you? I always post new artwork and my painting process on Instagram at @claramcallister.
