get a load of ant hamlyn’s squished blooms
We humans have loved flowers since the beginning, but we have to admit that we don’t treat our botanical buds in the best way. They’re literally plucked away from their homes and spend their remaining lifespan in our vases or, even worse, they’re pressed into our favourite books, cards and paper to be preserved long after their death – which is a tad bit morbid if you really think about it.
Ant Hamlyn seems to think so, as the London-based crafter explores this idea of pressed flowers by encasing his meticulously hand-sewn floral sculptures under acrylic sheets, squishing and distorting their original shapes. “When we crush a flower to preserve its beauty,” Ant says, “we essentially destroy it to preserve it”.
