friday flicks – movies to watch if you loved challengers

Peep our picks for more steamy movies like the Luca Guadagnino erotic drama.

We’re pretty simple creatures. We see Zendaya in a film, and we become fans of said film. Luca Guadagnino’s 2024 sport-romance drama is no exception, and we can’t help but crave a few more flicks that have the same level of sizzling tension (and a bit of tennis wouldn't hurt either, we reckon). Check out our list below of our rad flicks recommendations in case you’re itching to cast your peepers onto some spiffy movies.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME Also directed by Luca Guadagnino, this 2017 coming-of-age romantic drama stars Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer (before the latter was revealed to be a creep, to put it lightly) as two lovers enjoying the sunshine in rural Northern Italy in the summer of 1983, accompanied by Sufjan Stevens’ heartbreaking songs that we’ve been crying along to ever since. It’s a flick chock-full of amazing atmosphere, passionate performances and idyllic scenes of a Euro summer that we could only wish to ever experience, although you might want to steer away from peaches after watching this one.

CRUEL INTENTIONS This late ‘90s cult classic happens to feature some of our favourite stars of the decade, Alicia Silverstone and Reese Wetherspoon, playing a manipulative popular girl in love with her step-brother and a sweet-tempered ingenue, respectively. It’s a film originally based on the 1782 French novel “Les Liasions dangereuses” adapted for the 20th century and filled with the same kind of steamy love triangle present in “Challengers” (even if it’s slightly a bit more melodramatic and filled to the brim with teenage angst).

SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT
Love triangles are already pretty tantalising, but what about a love square? That’s even more exciting, we reckon. Directed, written and produced by the legendary Spike Lee (who also happens to star as a Brooklyn-loving motor-mouth in the film), the film follows main character Nola Darling who sees three different men as she attempts to come to terms with who she really wants to be with. Like most of Spike Lee’s flicks, “She’s Gotta Have It” takes place in the heart of New York City, Brooklyn, and it asks the audience a simple question: is monogamy really all it’s cracked up to be?

BATTLE OF THE SEXES
OK, we’re the first to admit that we don’t really know all that much about tennis, but we have to say that we happen to be pretty big fans of this 2017 sports film. Starring Emma Stone and Steve Carrell as real-life tennis players Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs (respectively), this film follows the two athletes going head-to-head in a 1973 match aptly called the “Battle of the Sexes”. It didn’t get nearly as much love as it deserved when it first came out which is a real shame, which is why we reckon it should be number one on your next movie night.

WHIPLASH
Who else can be as obsessed with perfection as the type of compulsive athletes in Challengers? Why, obsessed artists of course! This 2014 psychological drama, starring J.K Simmons and Miles Teller, follows main character and aspiring musician Andrew Neiman (Teller) studying under the strict tutelage of Terence Fletcher (Simmons), whose near-impossible standards push Andrew to his absolute limits. It’ll keep you on your toes and it’s jam-packed with enough suspense to drive anyone away from starting a career in music – or maybe it’ll inspire you to pick up a pair of drumsticks, who knows!
