EM JENSEN – WHAT A DRAG IT IS TO SEE YOU

I’m a self-taught photographer who shoots exclusively on film and Super 8. My work explores themes of nostalgia, youth, the Australian character, and I document many under-represented sub-cultures of Melbourne.

For too long the representation of drag culture in mainstream media has been incredibly exclusionary and lacking diverse representation. Shows like RuPaul's Drag Race have only given a platform to predominantly queer, cis-gender males who present as drag queens, but femme, trans and non-binary drag performers presenting as kings and things are not given equal exposure.

WADIITSY documents anyone who considers themselves a drag performer, challenging the stereotypical portrayal of drag culture and giving space for a diverse representation of performers to be seen. Drag performers Pip Serpentina, Tilly Capulet and Maxectomy are featured in these photos. The backdrops were provided by True Romance PhotoBooth and the series was shot at the Brunswick Ballroom.
