dana claxton’s photography explores native american beauty

By

Dana Claxton is a Vancouver-based photographer, performance artist and filmmaker whose photo series, Headdress, features the personal beadwork collection of five women (including herself). All artists hail from Old Crow, Yukon, and span three generations of Indigenous craftsmanship that are specific to the Vuntut Gwich’in First Nation.

The shutterbug also merges hip-hop and cowboy culture with the Indigenous experience in her work, such as giving a lowrider bike a makeover that evokes imagery of Plains’ warrior societies. Dana explains that the “past, present and future fold into each other,” to depict the “encounters, exchanges and violent conflicts that continue to shape North American Indigenous experiences to this day.” Make sure to pop over to her website over here to grab a nice look at all of her art.
