The World Expo ’88 series is a personal art project I was inspired to start after stumbling upon a collection of family photos of the event. It’s been fun reminiscing upon what was such a colourful period in Brisbane’s history. I think I was really interested in exploring Expo ’88 as subject matter because it made a lasting impression on ’80s kids growing up in Brisbane. For many of us, it was our first point of contact with the arts, world culture, monorails, undercuts, Memphis design, matching tracksuit ensembles, and of course, the legendary Australian artist Ken Done.
