While we wait for the second part of season three to arrive, these romantic films and shows give us the “Bridgerton” treatment we need.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for a couple years now, you might have noticed that Netflix’s Bridgerton has single-handedly saved the period drama genre and is the sole reason we even care about the past these days. OK, not really, but the point still stands: this racy and lavish show is a pretty big deal. If you want to check out a couple new shows and movies that are just as romantic, saucy and chock-full of extravagant costumes then peep our list below, since we’ve jotted down some ace things to watch if you need an extra kick of old-timey glamour.

THE HANDMAIDEN If erotic dramas set in the past happen to be your jam, then this 2016 South-Korean psychological-thriller should be in top position for your next watch. Set in Japan-occupied Korea in the 1930s, this flick follows the relationship between Lady Hideko (a wealthy Japanese heiress) and Nam Sook-hee (Hideko’s maid and pickpocket working in cohoots with a conman), which grows more and more complicated as the two grow into a romantic rendezvous. It just as steamy as Bridgerton with an added mix of crime-thriller and psychological-drama, which we reckon makes for a memorable watch that you’ll be thinking about long after the credits roll.

THE GREAT This show describes itself as “an occasionally true story” and loosely follows the reign and life of Catherine the Great, one of the most famous queens in Russian history – even landing her an untrue but infamous legacy involving a horse (you probably know the one). Starring Elle Fanning as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult as her husband (who, in real life, Catherine overthrew and jailed only six months into their marriage), this period drama rom-com features all of the glitz and glam of the Russian monarchy that one would come to expect, and we’re only a little bit pissed off that it got cancelled after three seasons. We still recommend giving it a watch, and keep holding out hope that it’ll one day get rebooted in a few years.

BELLE This 2013 film follows the life of Dido Elizabeth Belle, a biracial gentlewoman made famous by a 1778 portrait featuring herself and her cousin. While little is known about the real-life story of Dido herself, this fictionalised account involves her growing romance with a lawyer-to-be and her involvement in a monumental court case that helped pave the way for slavery abolition in Britain. Fans of the Bridgerton spin-off, Queen Charlotte, should absolutely give this period drama a watch since it features all of the same type of snazzy costumes as well as offering a discussion on the rampant racism evident during this era.

THE FAVOURITE Starring the always excellent Olivia Colman as the queen of early 18th century Britain, Queen Anne, The Favourite is a black comedy that focuses on the tumultuous relationship between cousins Sarah Churchill and Abigail Masham (played by Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, respectively) as they fight to remain the court favourite and romantic interest of the queen – scandalous! This movie was also written by the same smart cookie who created and wrote The Great, in case you wanted a bit more motivation to give this flick a try.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Where were you when you watched the scene where Mr. Darcy’s hand clenched for the first time? This iconic movie – starring Keira Knightley as Lizzie Bennett and Matthew Macfayden as Mr. Darcy – first popped onto the silver screen in 2005, and has since become a fan-favourite escapist romance flick of countless folk dotted across the planet. Everyone and their dog already knows the plot of this Jane Austen story already, but hey, it’s considered a classic for a reason, so it’s always an excellent watch.
