a list of interior essentials for any kind of abode

Whether you’re in a one-bedroom apartment or a massive share house with roomies, we reckon every home could do with a couple of these nifty (and cute) items.

With more of us working from home these days (the only good thing to come out of the pandemic, we reckon) we’re spending a lot more time hanging out in our cosy abodes. So, there’s no better time to add some much-needed interior essentials to your space. Have a look through all of the lovely and handy homewares we’ve plucked down below.

ROOM SPRAY Bad smells are definitely near the top of our list of deal-breakers. If you’re sharing your home with a furry pal or need an extra spritz of freshness, then room spray is a must-have for getting rid of any stench that’s overstaying its welcome. Some options we’re fond of include Ded Cool’s spring-inspired room spray, Jaspa’s cereal-y sweet spray or Koala Eco’s natural room spray that’s reminiscent of the Aussie bush.

PILLOWS There’s nothing better to transform a boring ol’ house into a home than some super-soft and lovely pillows. Whether you decide to plop them onto your couch, chairs or bed, they’re sure to give your abode (and you) a warm and fuzzy feeling. We happened to come across Some Design Store and their tulip-inspired pillows, Wild Throw Co and their lilac pillows and Sage x Clare’s adorable and fruity pillows, in case you needed some good inspiration.

LAMPS Fancy a late-night read without the blinding overhead light? Lamps will be your best friend for when you want to stay up without eye strain, and they’re also pretty handy to have in whatever section of your home you want to brighten up a tad. We reckon that these three lamps we’ve picked out are sure to tickle your fancy: Porta table lamp from nook collections, Cora table lamp from Paola & Joy and the touch mushroom lamp from Gigi & Tom (keep an eye out, yellow is currently sold out!)

BOTTLE OPENERS Don’t become the fool who breaks every set of keys or random cooking utensils by trying to bust open a particularly expensive bottle of grog – just get yourself a rad bottle opener! They’re especially handy to have around the house come dinner parties, beach days and more. Check out this cowboy-inspired one from lovefound, this golden beetle one from Bronze Betty and this smiley one from weareoutofoffice.

BATH MATS Slipping and leaving wet footprints all across your abode – collecting whatever dust you haven’t found time to vacuum up yet along the way – is not a pleasant experience to deal with. If you have yet to find a bathmat (and no, a soggy towel strewn across the floor doesn’t count) then check out our recommendations: Bonnie and Neil’s wave tan bath mat, Emma Mulholland on Holiday’s happy Hawaii bath mat and Mosey Me’s wiggle bath mat.

TEA TOWELS Not only good for cleaning up quick messes, tea towels are also pretty to look at – and what’s more important in a home than that? The ones we’re most fond of include this alligator-wrestling one from Quirksy, this one adorned with iconic bickies from Make Me Iconic and this pear one from Atollo Print Shop.

CUTTING BOARDS Whoever said that this essential item for cooking has to look dull? Nonsense, we say! Our favourite cutting boards include this Romeo and Juliet-inspired cutting board set (which could even make a pretty thoughtful wedding pressie) from Ivory & Deene, this Alma mini board set from Binny Bowe Boutique and this lemon cutting board from House.

PLATES Now, cooking and cleaning products are, of course, very important to have around the house, but what about crockery? Some may scoff and roll their eyes at the very idea of spending moolah on something as frivolous as fancy plates, but we are firm believers that pretty plates are for every occasion. Here are a couple that are especially lovely: summer fruit plate from Sage & Cooper, ‘70s eclipse plates from HKliving and birds of paradise plate from Kip & Co.

TEAPOTS If you’re anything like us, we think it’s safe to say that brewing a nice cuppa is one of life’s greatest treasures. Teapots are not only some of the most beautiful items to display in your kitchen, but they also make it possible to stay lounging without having to put the kettle back on. This two-toned teapot comes from FAZEEK, this ceramic blue and yellow teapot comes from T2 and we’ve also found this jasmine ceramic teapot from Pottery for the Planet.

MIRRORS If mirrors didn’t exist, we’d all probably be walking around with unruly hair, pasta stains everywhere and toothpaste hanging off the corners of our mouths without ever realising it. Thankfully, mirrors do exist. Check out some of our picks here: wavey mirror from Mocka, gold crackle wiggle mirror from Gussy Dup and Bowie rattan irregular mirror from Stitch and Straw.
