The special subscriber poster in issue 116 has got us reminiscing on warm summer evenings, sipping on cocktails as the sun set - bliss! Brought to you by frankie friend, Izzy Lawrence, you would've seen her work in our 'Last Meal on Earth' illustrated feature in issue 110 as well. We love the vibrant colour palette and texture she uses and how she somehow is able to capture the sparkle and reflection in her beautiful illustrations. We had a chat with her about how she first got started making art and how she motivates herself.
Tell us a little about your art and creative style.
My creative style is colourful, nostalgic and a little whimsical. I am inspired by hazy memories, sentimental still-life compositions and everyday moments when the light is hitting just right. Whenever possible I absolutely adore adding hints of magic like glows, sparkles, flowers, butterflies, or something unexpected to tickle the imagination! I want the work to feel both familiar and like a dreamy escape.

When and how did you first begin making art?
This has been a lifelong journey. From enthusiastic childhood scribbles, to getting in trouble constantly for homework pages covered in stars and rainbows. The act of drawing has been as much a part of my life as eating and drinking for as long as I can remember.
How did your artwork (now featured as a frankie poster!) come to be?
The artwork featured in the frankie poster (what a dream!) was inspired by a collage of memories of summer days spent sitting outside reading books, eating peaches and sharing cool drinks with friends. To start with I collected a few photos I had taken as references for colour, light and scale. Then I drew the idea to life on my own thanks to the incredible program Procreate.
Where do you find inspiration and creative motivation?
I heard an idea recently that motivation comes after starting something, not before and this struck me as very true. Occasionally I get an idea that makes me rush to start sketching, but more often I become motivated and inspired once I have started the act of drawing. This is when memories and ideas start swirling around in the air above me and I just have to reach up and pick something to pull down and put onto paper. So really, it’s the creative process that I am inspired by. The process of starting then changing and reworking until the idea becomes something real.
What’s next on your ‘to-create’ list?
I have a few commercial projects on the go, but for pure fun alongside these, I am finishing up an illustration of the Wheel of Fortune Tarot card. I think these cards are absolutely beautiful and one day I hope to create a complete set!
